The government now preaches constantly about the need for us to engage in "lifelong learning" to keep up with the changing demands of the modern world and participate in the "knowledge economy". To help make the ideal a reality, a variety of financial assistance programmes are available to help you acquire new skills.

Redundancy-Related Retraining Help

If the redundancy is a large-scale one, the Jobcentre is sometimes able to deploy special help through its Rapid Response Service. The help is uniquely tailored to the requirements of each case and can sometimes include financial help to pay for new training.

Adult Learning Grant

The government offers an Adult Learning Grant (ALG) to contribute to the costs of courses (or expenses related to them) which will help you achieve new levels of qualification. This is a significant restriction which you should note. It means that you cannot get funding for ELQ or Equivalent Level Qualifications. For example, if you already have two good A-Levels in English and French and want to retrain for a career in IT by doing A-Levels in Maths and Computing, you would not be eligible for the ALG. The new qualification must constitute progress of some sort.

The Adult Learning Grant can pay out up to £30 per week depending on the overall financial circumstances of your household. It is only available for full-time training courses, and you may be ineligible for it if you are also receiving benefits such as Income Support.

Higher Education Grants

If you're planning on going into higher education, government support comes in the form of maintenance grants, which are intended to help with your living expenses, and Student Loans, which can defray both your living expenses and your tuition costs at the institution of learning you attend. Grants do not have to be paid back; loans do. However, interest rates on student loans are now significantly higher than the rate of inflation for many loan types, and can reach over 7% for some borrowers.

Professional and Career Development Loan

The Professional and Career Development Loan scheme, which was supported by the government and administered by high street banks, closed for new applications in January 2019. The scheme previously allowed borrowers to take out loans of between £300 and £10,000 to cover course fees and related expenses for job-related learning courses lasting up to two years.

If you have an existing Career Development Loan, it will not be affected and you must continue to make repayments as agreed. For alternative funding options for retraining, you can contact the National Careers Service on 0800 100 900 for advice on current financial support available for adult learners.

@Mand Since you're out of work, your best first step is to speak to your Jobcentre Plus work coach, as they can sometimes fund vocational courses through the Flexible Support Fund. It's also worth checking if you qualify for a free Level 3 course under the Government's Free Courses for Jobs scheme, though dog grooming isn't always on the approved list. Adult learning loans are another option if grants don't cover it. Local colleges and providers like The Grooming Academy occasionally have funded places too, so ring round.

I have been told that I should be able to get some help in obtaining my LGV class C licence as I have been made redundant this week.

I have started paying for it off my own back, medical, theory and hazard perception have all been passed and I have booked my cpc case studies, I only need to do my training and test then my cpc modules. I do have means of paying for this myself to get it done, but obviously now being unemployed I would really appreciate any help I could get.

Firstly you put us all into lockdown for 4 months making it very hard for the economy to survive therefore making millions of people redundant.

I have had to have 2 months off work due a a stress related problem. I work as a HGV 1 driver and work alone alot.
As I have previously worked quite extensively as an RAF Medic, Senior Auxilliary Nurse, ECG Tech and Flight Nursing Attendant(RAF), my GP suggested that I use my knowlege and train to be an ambulance technition or paramedic.
To do so would mean a £10k pa drop in pay.
Is there any financial assistance I could get to start me off.
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

I am 58 years of age
I have worked in IT for 28 years
And now I cannot get a job because of my age
Before that I was an apprentice electrician for 15 years and would very much like to return to the trade as there is an acute shortage of qualified electricians
But I will need to retrain and that will cost upwards of 5000 pounds
Is there any government help I can get to help me move back into the electrical industry?

Unfortunately, this is something you would have to talk to your local Jobcentre Plus about, or your employer directly to see whether your employer can offer you an alternative position. The situation is improving in this area, with many people being able to access flexible working. We wish you the best of luck in finding a position that suits you better.

Hi so here my story I was diagnosed at 24 I'm now 27 with life long uc ulcerative colitis 150 cases in a possible 100,000 of the world's population I might add as of facts takeing in 2010 so it's a Very rare illness I've now been on ssp from my employer for 10.2 months and have applied for esa and will be apply for pip doctors and ibd consultant have said that my job and jobs like it are not good for my illness I should consider a desk job ect as there anything I can do I technical I'm class as someone with disability and as pointed out in recent new only 6% of UK people with a disability or illness are In working positions and company and govement need to do more to support these types of people in a workplace so my question is are there currently and ways of me retraining and getting qualifications for a new job or is it something I'll have to get fDWP to do thanks in advanced

@Footyman - some companies will give you the training and you pay them back over time from your wages. Your not likely to get a grant, but there may be a way around it.

@Debhub - it's unlikely. Help from the government towards recruiting employees generally only happens if there is a shortage in that particular industry.

Have you thought of applying for an apprenticeship? Please see gov.uk whichIt is unlikely you would get free funding for this as it would not be considered as having a skills shortage. Your only other option would be to take out a loan to train, but you would have to repay this.

Low Value Provision (LVP) is available via Jobcentre Plus and funded through the Flexible Support Fund which is a locally managed budget. The training and funding is available at the discretion of the Jobcentre Plus and its advisers. After assessment, if it is thought the person in receipt of benefits would benefit from a training course in order to get them back into work or fill particular vacancies then the training can be bought through Low Value Provision. We have no knowledge whether the scheme is still running - but if you have recently received confirmation it is, then you will need to continue to follow it up directly with Jobcentre Plus.

I was recently informed of a scheme called "LVP"-Low Value Provision at my local DWP office in Birmingham.
I went on the Government site for further detail but can only find details for training providers. I have contacted the local DWP again but have had no response.I have rang the number on the Gov website- in Blackpool but it seems to be not in use.
The scheme apparently gives claimants money to complete a short course in order to get work. The example I was given by the DWP manager was of someone who wanted to train as an HGV driver and got £6000 to learn !!

My question is - is this scheme still going and what can you get funding for?

Hello I am currently doing van driving full time, I was wondering if there is any type of government grants/loans that would help me aquire a lgv class1-2 licence, as I know this would definitely increase my earnings capabilities. The issue I am having is I cannot afford to out right pay for the cost, as well as providing a sustainable way of living for my family. My credit rating is not very good from mistakes I made when I was younger, so I'm also unable to do a train now pay later scheme or obtain a loan from the bank. Is there any help I can get from the government or other organisations to help me to gain a new career and increase my future earnings. Any information would be incredibly useful.

You'll need an industry-recognised qualification eg a Level 3 (NVQ) Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating. You could also take a foundation course in plumbing skills at college. This may help you to find a trainee position with a company. Please see gov.uk whichIt is highly unlikely you will find any course for free, but you could consider transferring to an apprenticeship which is paid. You may be able to do a part-time City and Guilds course as an evening class - you would have to check if your local colleges run a course to apply.

It's a tricky situation if you need the qualification prior to joining the company. Many employers can get CITB grants or funding for employees if they are paying the levy. However, you would need to be employed. I can only suggest you approach the Jobcentre Plus to see if it has any helpful information.

Hi my response is to tiggis123. You certainly can get help whilst on the sick and there are lots of organisations out there who will support you and work around your health condition. Remploy, Shaw Trust and lots more!
You are also able to get something called an advanced learner loan which can fund training like you are after, and is repayable once you are back in employment earning over 22k per yer. Hope this helps!

My husband is in the exact same position as scottycarts. Rapid response has said they only fund short courses and 14 weeks is too long. How quickly do they expect someone to retrain/upskill? Job centre has now recognised this company's exemployees as eligible for retraining funding but are only offering such courses as fork lift truck training. How is that a carear change? Please can you advise if there are any kind of grants or funding that might be available.

Hi just been made redundant with no notice period along with around 600 other people. Because of the swiftness of the administration and resulting closer of the business (5weeks in total). There was no job clubs or careers help during the administration. I have asked careers for help since my redundancy in training courses but they tell me that i can only upskill. This isnt an option as i have the highest qualification in the industry and worked at the largest printing plant in europe which paid the highest wages in britian and it closed in 5 weeks notice. The future of print is on the decline and jobs in the area for print are very limited. I have found a course with a job upon completion but getting no positive info back from careers service the course is in a sector with large growth and a shortfall of workers. You don't say whether you are eligible for benefits, if so this would be your first priority and at the same time you would be helped to get back into work and/or given guidance on what grants may be available. It may at first not be the type of job you have been trained for, but by working and earning you would be able to save to apply for your licences again. Your first port of call should be JobCentre Plus as their advisers may be able to help point you in the right direction.

Hi I'm a 53 year old male who use to work for the council and had to go and have an eye operation and while i was on the sick the council advertised my job i was only on sick for 4 weeks then i was ready to go back to work but things got worse for me my wife died and i had another 5 operation after that so i was on the sick for about 2/3 years so i got my self ready to back to work so walked about 7 miles to see my supervisor about starting work and he recon that i didnt want to work so they turminated my contract there and then. So i went to see my doctor and they put me back on sick with depresion because of every thing i went throu then i was one ESA for a while then the council evicted me from the bunglow about 12 month ago and i have been living in a caravan since then looking for work and not getting any benefit. I use to be a machine operator and i use to drive a 7.5 lorry now all my licences have expired so how can somebody like me get work now if i cant afford all the cost to get my licenses back so i can get work if i had them back i would get work straight away can somebody help me get back to work so i can start living again.

With regards to HGV training, there are various options. You could in the first instance contact your local Job Centre Plus, as they may have some training grants on offer, or could point you in the right direction. If you are over 24 stay away from any training that includes having to do an apprentiship.
The way the apprentiship system is set out discriminates against mature students making employers not be able to afford taking on the student or not want to as it will cost them money.
This is because if they take on a 16 -24 year old they get grants to cover the apprentices wages of which they only have to pay them £2.78 an hour and the government pays for all the college fees.
But if they take on some one over 24 there is no grant to cover the wages and after 1 year they cant pay any less than the minimum wage for the age group of the apprentice which for over 25s is going up to over £7 an hour next year. Also it is normally down to the employer to pay for the cost of training an older student.
I have just finished doing my level 2 course to become an electrician and need to do level 3 and an apprentiship and even thoe I have told companies that I am willing to pay for my own college fees and training no one is willing to even consider giving me a chance because they will have to pay me a minimum wage.
So I am going to have to give it up and go back to van driving.

You would have to do an online search for university courses on the subject. However, you would have to pay back and student loans and tuition fees if you took this route.

@Taz - sorry to hear this. The positive thing is that if you live in a busy region, there is always good opportunities for HGV drivers and there is work out there. However, money for training might be scarce and if you have attempted the suggestions laid out in the article and you have not had a result, there are some firms that will let you train and once you have your licence, pay them back from your salary. However, I'm afraid we cannot recommend companies personally, so you would have to do a search online. I hope this helps.

I have a son and live with him and his mother he is now 2 years old and I am trying to better my income as the taxi job is just getting worse all the time it's getting harder to pay our bills so as a father I need to better myself. @Scotty - have you applied directly for jobs? As it may be something you could train on the job to do. I'd give some of the companies who might be advertising on somewhere like Indeed, a call directly and ask if they have any general vacancies with a view to you getting some fork lift training once you were earning. Sometimes you have to think outside the box.

I am trying to find a way to fund a course to become a telescopic fork lift operator but the job centre don't have any interest in helping me. I've been unemployed for 4 months now and being over 30 seems to be detrimental to my cause. I ha e looked into a career and development loan but having bad credit, I'm worried I won't be accepted. I think it's discusting the whole grant approach from the government. They will quite happily give £100,000's and millions to businesses that should have no problem lending from banks etc. where is the help for the average person seeking a £600 course to get them back into work or help them take a step forward in career development. The truth is the help is far and few between. There are still struggling people that simply can't afford training costs and are unable to take bank loans etc. it's just not good enough.. It's discusting and to be honest they do not care If your over 30 and your credit is poor and unless you can prove your on the million dollar road forget it. You'll have more chance landing clarksons job on top gear. The government wants the average individual that can only just make ends meet struggle so they keep working to make ends meet and so these people are paying tax. No 1 priority.

@aldo - can your employer not help you out if you are required to obtain your licence for the job? Could you approach your line manager and ask for a loan through the company that you can pay back in instalments as you work? There are a few companies that do this. I'm afraid there is little free training about currently, especially for those who are already working.

Hi everyone, I see there is an email from Rhonda asking about the Prince2 course and funding, I am delighted to have been accepted onto such a course in my locality. I had to really press the point about getting re-trained at my local Job Centre plus. I really look forward to qualifying for this. Have been applying for 3 jobs a day every day, it's really a job getting a job. I have even applied for jobs I really would not be able to do, just to get them on my job record, have had a lot of interviews. It was at first very disheartening for me, I am a skilled trained and certificated I.T. professional, I have had two near misses on employment, the first company said there was a staff retention problem, and the whole setup did not feel right, so I did not end up employed there, and the second I thought would be my dream job (Maritime Simulation) turned out to need carpentry and joinery skills, was advertised as a PC technical engineer. I did not last there. I am sure I can succeed eventually. My advice, Never give up and keep plugging , times will get better, they have to. I'm 52, Used to formerly work as a Road Transport manager for Royal Mail (worked my way up from a humble postie, getting bitten by dogs and the odd member of public) and NEXT clothing (Logistics) and have also worked for both FORD and General Motors on both Quality control and am a fully qualified paint sprayer (Automotive). @Nomski - I think the government withdrew these grants, I think it's quite hard to get grants these days for anything. There are lots of people your age going to do apprenticeships as a way of retraining, it's one way in, but I don't know if they do driving instructor ones.

About 4 years ago I asked jobcentre if they would fund me for training to become a driving instructor. This was a passion I had for many many years, I have been out of work for a long time due to being single parent bringing children up on my own. Finding it very very hard to get back to work, ive done extra courses like IT computer skills and Customer service. I think as im older, 50 next year. I really want to do something I know I would put 200% into and have for long term careenr. I Have clean licence, been driving since I was 17 and I know im a great driver and could be a great instructor. If I was given funding years ago it would have saved goverment money as im still on jobseekers, cant get work for love nor money.Do you no of anywhere I could get grant for this? I cant get any loans due to my ex husbands debt issues, if anyone could help then contact me. it would be greatly apprieciated thanks for your time

@darrell coveyclark - if you are unemployed you can speak to your employment advisor who will let you know if there are any grants out there. However, I suspect not. One route is to become an apprentice. While we think apprenticeships are designed specifically for young adults there are an increasing amount of older people seeing it as a way to retrain for free. While the wage may be only minimum, it means that at least you have some money coming in while you can re-train. Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16 years-old. In order to qualify you need to be a resident in England and not taking part in full-time education. I hope this helps.

@matureworker - it might be difficult to get a grant if you are already working. There are a few companies that will let you either stagger the payments or train and then pay your fees back once qualified. It's great that you already have a job, might the hours increase? There are certainly more driving jobs around these days mainly due to the fact that so many people are buying online. I'd give the National Careers Service a call, they're quite good at explaining your options.

After being laid of a year ago I have had temp job after temp job until fed up, I am starting a driving job but only 24hrs. I love driving and can drive only so much on D1, I would like to do a class 2 licence and want to know if a grant is available to me to cover cost?

Hi I have been in and out of work for the last 2 years and fed up to the back teeth with it now, I want to retrain into something like plant operative or HGV how do I qualify for a government grant to help me fund this.

@wattsy - I'm not sure if the JobCentre Plus still run them but you may be able to if you are over 50, or if you are on Job Seekers allowance. In addition there are some firms that offer pass or your money back training.

I would like to progress as a swimming teacher. I have my ASA Level One but to progress and work full time for a swim school I need my ASA Level Two which costs 680 pounds. I have just taught in the UAE for a year to gain experience so I have invested a lot of time. I am now on JSA as I can't progress without the level two which would also allow me to teach privately so I can work hard and do what I love. Is there any grant or organization that can help me with this course? Many Thanks

ive been a city and guilds qualified plumbing and heating eng for the past 24 years untill my bipola became to problematic to work my acs qualifications which must be renewed every 5 years to be able to work have expired and due to my limited income because of surviving on benefits im unable to afford the cost to re certifier myself and regain my gas safe registration im then going to with help and support of my doctor and support agency's hope to work again as i feel its a important part of my recovery and any advice to help me obtain funding would be warmly received

I am just being made redundant just before i was selected for my GDA course with my employer, because i am just a DEA and the business market has changed my employer requires GDA only " a bit of bad luck and timing ".
So i am asking about doing the GDA course myself and how to pay for this ?

I'm age 25 and have worked on construction sites all my life as a labourer with poor wages especially as agency's have taken over hiring for company's im working for next to nothing I would really be grate full for a grant or funding for cpcs ticket for telehandler forklift I would pay back every penny I just need a helping hand to raise the money so I can earn a better living thankyou for taking time to read.

I am a Business Studies graduate with over 20 years experience in marketing in a variety of consumer product markets. I have typically worked in full mix marketing roles and co-ordinated the new product development process for companies from idea & concept generation to launching products in UK and overseas markets. The last 5 years have been tough with a mixture of interim and consultancy assignments but for the majority of time looking to secure a permanent marketing or commercial role. Although I am aware of nearly all the major specialist marketing recruiters both in terms of jobsites and conventional recruiters my CV and covering letter seems to create little if any traction and although I apply for relevant roles, say 5 per week there is little if any response. At 48 I am reluctant to turn my back on the career and work I have enjoyed but with a need to work to keep financially afloat as well as stimulate my brain, I have a major dilemma - retrain to survive or perish, but retrain as what that is the real dilemma. I am highly organised, a good communicator and having mixed with personnel from the shop floor to the board I have good people skills. I have a strong sense of commercialism and know the need for companies to generate profit and cash. All this said I am unsure what new career to pursue - any ideas would be welcome.

I would like to know if I can receive a grant. I am 40 years old and would like to take a TEFL course enabling me to teach English. I already have 6 years experience in Poland. However, having had time out I realize I would need this certificate to continue. Also I am currently on JSA. :(

Can I get any help with the A1 assessors fees?I have been made redundant however in receipt of government pension.I understand there is a shortage of NVQ assessors. I do have the qualifications work as an assessor, however the cost is prohibitive at present. I already made one payment to a training agency , but because of previous redundancies was unable to continue with payments.I look forward to your reply.Many thanks.Vicky Berriman

Anyone wanting to do get their Class 1 HGV, might want to consider joining the Royal Logistic Corps Territorial Army. Their are age limits, but I think it is about 40 years old. You get paid for attending one evening per week and weekends and you not have to do this every week. There is a 2 week training course, full time, but your prepared in advance for this and paid for every day of training. If you complete a certain number of days annually, you also get what's called a Bounty which is quite a large payment for completing a certain amount of days per year.

There is a great feeling of belonging and you gain the best of training in heavy goods you can get. It's worth checking it out. Employers are strongly 'encouraged' to enable you to make your commitment, so don't be out off if you can't imagine them letting you have the time off.

Hello.

I was made redundant on the 22nd of june this year, I have applied for several jobs but unfortuantely i havn't had much luck.
Has soon as i found out i was going to be made redundant i booked a HGV driving course, I passed my class 2 first time, I would now like to book my class 1 training, But my finances are getting seriously low at this point, My biggest issue is trying to fund my class 1 training as it cost around 1200 pounds,
I realy don't know what other options to take, I am 40 years old
